How do you set up a loyalty program in a bakery or patisserie?

A bakery has two kinds of customers: the one who buys bread every morning and the one who buys a cake at the weekend or for a special day. A good bakery loyalty card rewards both on the same card: an early mid-way reward for small baskets and points by amount for big orders. Here is how to set up that balance.

How many purchases for a reward?

Bakery baskets vary a lot: if a morning loaf and a birthday cake earn the same stamp, either the patisserie loses money or the bread customer never finishes the card. A points card or a card with a mid-way reward works better.

Example (all numbers are examples only): give 1 point per ₺50. A customer who buys ₺60 of bread and simit every morning collects about 6 points a week. Put a small mid-way reward, such as a pastry or a cookie, at 25 points and a box of cookies at 80. The bread customer sees the first reward in a month, and someone buying a ₺900 cake earns 18 points in one order.

Count the reward at your production cost, not the shelf price; using end-of-day stock as the mid-way reward lowers it further. Details are in the ROI guide.

Campaign ideas for bakeries and patisseries

  • Special-day orders: before Mother's Day, New Year or a holiday, send a scheduled campaign ("We take holiday pastry orders until Thursday"). You collect orders early and can plan production.
  • Weekend cake: schedule a short announcement for Friday afternoon ("Strawberry tart this weekend, pre-orders open").
  • New product: when a new sourdough loaf or seasonal dessert comes out, announce it on the lock screen.
  • Streak bonus: give bonus points to customers who come 5 days in a row; the daily bread habit shows on the card.
  • Birthday bonus: a bonus lands on the card on the customer's birthday, a good reminder to order the cake from you. Automated campaigns and bonuses are in the Growth and Pro plans.

The flow at the counter

Between 7 and 9 am the queue has to keep moving. Customers add the card while they wait, and at the counter staff only scan the card's QR. Unlike a cafe, most customers here do not sit down, so the QR belongs at the display case and till rather than on tables. If you have a seating area, the flow on the cafe loyalty card page fits it better.

  1. Put the sticker on the display case and the till, and hang the A4 poster where the queue starts.
  2. One line at the counter is enough: "Is your card in Wallet? You earn points on this loaf too."
  3. For pre-ordered cakes, add the points on pickup day once the customer pays.
  4. Open separate staff accounts for the early and late shift; the dashboard shows how many transactions each shift handled.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do small purchases get stamps too?

You decide. For example, you can give a stamp for purchases over 50 ₺.

How long does setting up the card take?

Pick a template, write the reward: a few minutes. Download your QR from the dashboard and print it.

Bread is bought daily. Won't cards fill up too fast?

With a points card you set the pace: tune the points rate and reward threshold so bread customers see their first reward after about a month. You can also set an expiry for points: customers who stay away for a long time lose their points, so forgotten cards do not turn into an unexpected cost later.

I take cake orders by phone. How are the points added?

How the order came in does not matter: when the customer picks up the cake, the card's QR is scanned at the counter and points are added by amount. If they have no card yet, they can scan the QR on the display case at pickup and add it right away.

Does my customer need to download an app?

No. The customer scans the QR with the phone camera and the card is added straight to Apple Wallet. On Android it opens as a saveable page in the browser.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

On iPhone the card goes into Apple Wallet. On Android it works as a saveable browser page (stamping by QR is the same). On both, the phone's own camera reads the QR.
